We finished the bottle of wine then called it a night. I was exhausted both from the events of the day and from using my magic so much. Normally, I could do that much without breaking a sweat, but the additional stress had wiped me out. Between cleansing the items, dealing with Elizabeth's death, and navigating the emotional quicksand that was my new relationship with Luther, I was wiped out.

The next morning, I woke up early with a little bit of a headache. I wasn't sure if it was from the wine or the disjointed dreams but figured maybe it was a combination of it all.

I'd barely managed to shuffle downstairs and pop a pod in the coffee pot before my phone dinged. Expecting it to be Eli, I pulled it from the pocket of my pajama pants and tapped my messages button.

Before I could read it, Jake strolled into the room. "Is that your boyfriend?"

I scowled at him. "I don't have a boyfriend. What are you doing up so early?"

He glanced at the clock on his phone. "It's not early. It's like eight o'clock."

I pulled my coffee cup from the machine and dumped some creamer in it. "That's early for you. Especially lately. You weren't here when I got home last night, so I’m a little surprised to see you."

I tried to keep the trace of bitterness from my voice. He'd been dating a professor, and I hadn't seen much of him lately. It hurt a little because we’d always been two peas in a pod, and I felt a little like he'd set me aside. Yes, I realize that sounds immature, but feelings are real no matter how dysfunctional they are.

He reached around me and slid his cup under the nozzle of the coffee pot, then popped a fresh pod in. "I'll have you know I told her I was spending the entire day with you today. I've missed you."

I glanced at him sideways. "Does that mean she has to work today?"

Hurt scurried across his face. "No, Sage, that means I told her I was spending the day with you today."

Ashamed of myself, I gave him an impromptu hug. "I'm sorry. It just been a rough couple of days. That wasn't fair, and I'm glad we’re hanging out. I miss you too."

He motioned toward my phone. "You got a message right as I was coming in. Was it Eli? I wouldn't mind hanging out with him too."

I stirred my coffee and took it to the table, plucking a bunch of grapes from the sideboard as I went. "Actually, it was Luther. I haven't read the message yet though."

He joined me at the table after he grabbed a bagel. "So are things getting serious there?" he asked as he slathered cream cheese onto it.

I shrugged as I popped a grape in my mouth. "Not sure. I mean, I like him, but I don't know much about them, and until I do, I'm not willing to commit."

He studied me for a second as he chewed.
